Discover Materials Ambassadors at the British Science Festival

After a memorable experience at the British Science Festival 2023, the Discover Materials team returned to the British Science Festival to engage with curious minds and share their love for materials science.

On the 15th of September, 2024, at the University of East London, the event proved to be a congregation of science enthusiasts. Armed with their popular busking box, our team showcased the wonderful world of materials science at their stall.

Visitors were introduced to various smart materials. Demonstrations included paper clips made of Nitinol (a shape memory alloy) and UV colour-changing beads. The lotus leaves on display were favourite conversation-starters, and their super hydrophobic properties left visitors fascinated. The tensile tester (which we used to measure structural properties of sweets!) garnered great enthusiasm, while the ferrofluids in a bottle also evoked several eager questions. These table top demonstrations initiated discussions about the current ongoing materials research.

Thank you to all the ambassadors (Durga, Tushar, Katie and Tosin) for their time and effort in sharing their passion for materials at the Festival.
