Discover Materials Ambassadors Conference 2025

The fourth annual Discover Materials Ambassadors Conference will be held at The University of Oxford on 10th September 2025.

This year we will be linking Materials Science and Engineering to the school curriculum which will help you target your outreach to the school curriculum and there will also be lots of opportunities to network with fellow members of the Discover Materials community and some amazing science communicators from the University of Oxford.

1030 – 1100 Arrival and welcome drinks

1100 – 1230 – Welcome and updates from Discover Materials

• Welcome
• Updates from Discover Materials – Includes photos of events and what opportunities look like
• Update from Social Media group – Overview of types of contents needed and intro to editing and posting videos

1145  1230 – School curriculum links and Discover Materials kit

• School curriculum links with Materials Science – A guided discussion session on where MSE sits in the National Curriculum and, so, how best to tailor outreach sessions for schools
• Discover Materials kit – DMAs to get hands on with DM kit and link it to curriculum

1230 – 1400 Lunch and networking session – including networking with science communicators from University of Oxford

1400 – 1600 Effective communication

1400 Effective Public Speaking  – An interactive session covering the basics of presenting in all situations. Focussing on core skills such as pacing, breathing and physicality, you’ll leave this session ready to present confidently. 

1530 – 1600 – Activity session  – A session looking at removing jargon from outreach and explaining scientific concepts in simple, relatable ways

1600 – Wrap up and finish – A wrap up of the event, upcoming opportunities for outreach and presentation of DMA Engagement Awards
