Research Fellow at the School of Metallurgy & Materials, University of Birmingham

 

What A-Levels (or equivalent) did you do? 

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

 

Why did you chose a career in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)? 

I was impressed with the dependence of social development on materials.

 

What did you enjoy most about your MSE course? 

That everything in the world is made of materials.

 

What is your research about?  

How metallic materials behave under extreme environments, e.g., close to absolute zero temperature.

 

What is the coolest thing you have done in your career so far?  

Using the large-scale accelerators (some of the biggest equipment in the world) to study the tiniest details of material.

 

What do you see yourself doing in the future? 

An academic in metallurgy who is sharing the joy of that with others.

 

What is your favourite material (and why)?  

Shape memory alloy.

 

What advice would you give your 16 year old self? 

Explain myself challenges of the hard sciences and complement that with the knowledge from other fields, e.g., philosophy or history.
