What is your current job / programme of study?
PhD, final year.
Which A-Levels (or equivalent) did you do?
English language, chemistry and physics.
Why did you choose a career in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)?
Materials science is an interesting topic and is relevant in day-to-day life. The subject is interdisciplinary which means you put together knowledge from different science subjects. It is an important area of science that can be applied in every industry. Companies are always looking to improve their products and that all begins with an understanding in the fundamentals of what the materials are and how they work.
What is your research about?
My research focuses on the science behind polymer 3D printing.
What is the coolest thing you have done in your career so far?
I have seen 3D printing live in action and got my hands on the complex components it can make!
What do you see yourself doing in the future?
I would continue a career in research but move into industry where I can apply my existing knowledge. I would also like to showcase materials science and help people gain a better understanding of what materials science is and why it is important.
What is your favourite material (and why)?
Since my research focuses on polymers, my favourite material is nylon because it is used in so many different applications.
What advice would you give your 16 year old self?
Study subjects that you enjoy and do not put too much pressure on yourself, everything will fall into place!
