Thermal imaging camera

Infrared radiation is an electromagnetic wave with longer wavelength than the visible part of the spectrum.

Thermal imaging cameras analyse the infrared radiation given off my objects and convert it to an image so that we can visualise the temperature of an object.

This has a wide range of uses. For example they can be used for looking for draughts around the home and also to help visualise the different thermal conductivity of different materials.

Each of the Discover Materials partner universities has a thermal imaging camera that can be brought into school or to other outreach events.
