Sean Foong
What is your current programme of study?
MEng Materials Science and Engineering
What A-Levels (or equivalent) did you do?
Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, EPQ
Why did you choose a career in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)?
I’ve always been passionate about sustainable technology and finding solutions to combat climate change. That’s why I’m drawn to materials science as it’s crucial in the of development of cleaner energy, reducing waste, and creating eco-friendly alternatives to harmful materials. MSE gives me the perfect blend of practical work and application of theoretical knowledge.
What did you enjoy most about your MSE course?
I really enjoy the fact that the course integrates loads of team working opportunities. Currently, I am working on building a robocaster for 3D printing with ceramic suspensions in a company of 12 other people. It is something we have never encountered before but I find it exciting learning and discovering new ways to approach the problem as a whole.
What is the coolest thing you have done in your career so far?
Operating new machinery in the lab when testing and synthesizing materials
What do you see yourself doing in the future?
I see myself doing research in biomaterials and going into entrepreneurship
What is your favourite material (and why)?
My favourite material is aerogel. It is incredibly versatile due to its low density and potential to be doped with other materials for specific applications. It could also play a role in counteracting climate change by using it as a potential aerosol in stratospheric aerosol injection.
What advice would you give your 16 year old self?
Be interested in everything and be more creative.
